WooCommerce Migration

Your current platform was the right choice when you started. But your business has changed. Shopify’s transaction fees are eating into margins. Magento’s hosting costs keep climbing. The plugins and apps you depend on cost more every year, and you’re still working around limitations the platform was never designed to handle.

Migrating to WooCommerce doesn’t have to mean starting over. We transfer your entire store — products, customers, order history, reviews, SEO rankings, and URL structures — onto a custom WooCommerce build with the integrations, performance, and data ownership your business actually needs.

Every migration includes a new WooCommerce store build, managed hosting setup, and post-migration support. You get a better platform and a better store in one move.

We’ll assess your current platform, scope the migration, and give you a clear proposal — no obligation.

The three reasons stores outgrow their platform.

Transaction Fees and Rising Costs

Shopify charges transaction fees on every sale unless you use Shopify Payments. Add the monthly subscription, paid apps for features WooCommerce includes natively, and the cost of working around platform limitations — and the total cost of ownership is often double what store owners expect. WooCommerce has no transaction fees. You choose your own payment gateway and keep what you earn.

Data Ownership and Control

On hosted platforms, your customer data lives in their system. You can export some of it, but you can’t build custom analytics, feed data into your own AI models, or run first-party tracking without platform restrictions. With WooCommerce, every customer interaction — searches, cart activity, purchase history, browsing patterns — is stored in your own database. Your data. Your decisions.

Flexibility Without App Bloat

Shopify stores commonly run 15–25 paid apps to achieve functionality that WooCommerce handles with standard configuration or a single custom plugin. Each app adds monthly cost, potential performance impact, and a dependency on a third-party developer who may abandon the product. WooCommerce gives you the full codebase — nothing is locked, nothing requires permission, and custom functionality is built to your requirements.

Shopify to WooCommerce. The most common migration we handle.

Most of our migration clients come from Shopify. They’ve built a successful store but they’ve hit the ceiling — transaction fees are a constant drain, the app stack costs more than the platform subscription, and every time they need custom functionality, the answer is “Shopify doesn’t support that.”

We’ve migrated stores with 50 products and stores with 50,000 products. The process is the same: we scope what needs to move, build a custom WooCommerce store to replace what Shopify was doing (and do what it couldn’t), transfer every piece of data, and launch without a gap in service.

What we migrate from Shopify

  • Products — titles, descriptions, images, variants, prices, inventory levels, SKUs, and metadata
  • Customers — accounts, addresses, order history, and communication preferences
  • Orders — full order history including line items, payment status, shipping details, and refund records
  • Reviews — product reviews and ratings, preserved and mapped to the correct products
  • Content — pages, blog posts, navigation menus, and redirects
  • URL structure — 301 redirects from every Shopify URL to the new WooCommerce equivalent, preserving SEO equity
  • Discount codes and gift cards — active codes migrated and configured in WooCommerce

What you gain that Shopify couldn’t give you

  • No additional transaction fees on extra payment gateways
  • Custom integrations with Xero, MYOB, Shippit, and your POS system — built in, not bolted on
  • Full data ownership and first-party customer tracking
  • Custom functionality without app dependencies
  • Australian-hosted dedicated servers (not shared US infrastructure)
  • Complete code ownership — no lock-in, ever

Magento to WooCommerce. Before the next upgrade forces your hand.

Magento stores often reach a tipping point. The hosting costs are substantial. Finding Magento developers is increasingly difficult and expensive. The upgrade path from Magento 2 to the latest version is complex. And Adobe’s licensing model makes the total cost of ownership hard to predict.

WooCommerce handles the same complexity — product configurators, B2B pricing, multi-warehouse inventory, ERP integrations — without the infrastructure overhead or developer scarcity. We’ve migrated Magento stores running complex catalogue structures, custom checkout flows, and enterprise integrations. For the full picture — what migrates, timelines, and the honest caveats — see our dedicated Magento to WooCommerce migration page.

What we migrate from Magento

  • Full product catalogue — simple, configurable, grouped, and bundled products with all attributes
  • Customer accounts — addresses, order history, wishlists, and customer groups
  • Orders — complete transaction history, invoices, credit memos, and shipping records
  • Categories and attributes — taxonomy structure preserved and mapped to WooCommerce
  • CMS content — pages, blocks, and media assets
  • URL structure — 301 redirects preserving SEO equity from the Magento URL structure
  • Custom functionality — assessed and rebuilt as WooCommerce equivalents where needed

Why Magento stores move to WooCommerce

  • Dramatically lower hosting costs (dedicated WooCommerce server vs Magento infrastructure)
  • Larger developer talent pool and lower development costs
  • Simpler update and maintenance cycle
  • Same extensibility without the overhead
  • No licensing fees

Every record. Every relationship. Every URL.

The number one concern we hear from store owners considering migration is: “Will I lose anything?” The answer is no — and we can prove it.

Every migration includes a data reconciliation report. After transfer, we compare record counts and spot-check data integrity across products, customers, orders, and content. You’ll see exactly what was migrated and verify it matches your source platform before we go live.

Data migration checklist

  • Product data — all fields, variations, images, categories, tags, attributes, and custom metadata
  • Customer records — accounts, addresses, encrypted passwords (re-authentication on first login), and order history
  • Order history — line items, payment records, shipping details, refund history, and order notes
  • SEO preservation — 301 redirects for every URL, meta titles, meta descriptions, and canonical tags
  • Content — pages, blog posts, and media library
  • Reviews and ratings
  • Tax configuration — GST rules, tax classes, and zone-based tax settings
  • Shipping configuration — zones, rates, and carrier integration settings
  • Discount rules — coupon codes, automatic discounts, and free shipping thresholds

From your current platform to WooCommerce — step by step.

Step 1

Migration Assessment

We audit your current platform — product count, customer database size, order volume, integrations, custom functionality, and URL structure. You’ll receive a migration scope document outlining exactly what moves, what gets rebuilt, and what the new WooCommerce store will look like.

Step 2

WooCommerce Store Build

Migration isn’t just a data transfer — it’s a new store. We design and build your WooCommerce store with the same process as our standard builds: custom design, integrations, speed optimisation, and compliance. The difference is that your existing data populates the new store.

Step 3

Data Migration (Staging)

We transfer your data to the staging environment. Products, customers, orders, content, and URL redirects are all migrated and mapped. You can review the staging site and verify everything before we touch your live store.

Step 4

Integration Setup

Plugins or extensions, payment gateways, POS systems, and any custom integrations are configured and tested on staging. We verify that data flows correctly between WooCommerce and your operational tools before go-live.

Step 5

Final Sync and Launch

On launch day, we run a final delta sync to capture any orders or customer changes since the staging migration. DNS is cut over, SSL is provisioned, and your WooCommerce store goes live. Your old platform URL redirects are activated immediately.

Step 6

Post-Migration Support

30–90 days of dedicated post-migration support (depending on build tier). We monitor for any data discrepancies, redirect issues, or integration problems and resolve them as part of the migration engagement.

Your current store stays live and fully operational throughout the entire migration process. There is no downtime.

Migration pricing.

Every migration is different. A 200-product Shopify store with standard checkout is a different scope from a 15,000-SKU Magento store with custom B2B pricing and an ERP integration. We price migrations based on the actual work required, not a one-size-fits-all package.

“Nick has been managing my WooCommerce account for many years now helping me to improve my SEO and overall visibility of my website. Nick is always looking for ways to make things better and more efficient for me. Nick won me over with his honesty, trustworthiness and drive to help. He takes the stress out of the ecommerce side of my business. There are a lot of web developers out there that are eager to take your money and not provide the service you asked for. Nick is not one of these people.”

“We employed Duelling Pixels about 1.5 years ago when we re-located and re-branded our business. We worried about losing our online presence and customers being confused with our name change. So they created a fresh new look for our website and handled everything. Couldn’t be happier.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my store go offline during migration?

No. Your current store stays live and fully operational throughout the entire process. We build the new WooCommerce store on a staging environment. On launch day, we run a final data sync and cut over the DNS — the switchover typically happens in under an hour with no customer-facing downtime.

Will I lose my Google rankings?

Not if the migration is done correctly — and that’s exactly why it matters who handles it. We map every URL from your current platform to the new WooCommerce structure and implement 301 redirects. Meta titles, descriptions, and canonical tags are preserved. Most stores see a brief fluctuation in the first 2–4 weeks, followed by recovery or improvement as the new site’s faster load times and cleaner structure take effect.

What happens to my existing customers’ accounts?

Customer accounts are migrated with all data intact — order history, addresses, and preferences. Passwords cannot be transferred between platforms (they’re encrypted), so customers will need to reset their password on first login. We configure a seamless password reset flow so this is a one-click process, not a frustrating experience.

Can you migrate my Shopify apps and custom features?

Shopify apps don’t transfer directly — they’re Shopify-specific. But most app functionality can be replicated in WooCommerce with standard plugins, built-in features, or custom development. During the migration assessment, we map every app you’re using to its WooCommerce equivalent and flag any that need custom solutions.

How long does a migration take?

Typical timelines: 6–8 weeks for a simple Shopify migration, 8–12 weeks for complex Shopify migrations, and 10–16 weeks for Magento migrations. The main variable is the new store build, not the data transfer. We’ll provide a specific timeline in the migration assessment.

Is migration included if I sign up for hosting?

Site migration (transferring an existing WooCommerce site to our hosting) is included at no charge for new hosting clients. Platform migration (rebuilding from Shopify, Magento, etc.) is a separate project that includes a new store build — see pricing above.

What if I’m not sure whether to migrate?

Start with our comparison page — WooCommerce vs Shopify: An Honest Comparison — or request a free Store Health Check. We’ll assess your current platform honestly and only recommend migration if the numbers support it.

Do you handle migrations from platforms other than Shopify and Magento?

Yes. We’ve migrated stores from BigCommerce, Squarespace, WooCommerce (rebuilds), and custom platforms. The process is the same — we assess what needs to move and build a migration plan. Contact us to discuss your specific platform.
