WooCommerce Web Design
Custom WooCommerce Stores That Sell, Not Just Look Good.
We offer design, integrations, and performance engineering for Australian businesses ready to move beyond templates, Shopify’s limits, or their current agency.
Each year, Australian WooCommerce stores lose money because of slow checkouts, broken integrations, and stores patched together with plugins that don’t work well together.
We handle WooCommerce stores from strategy through to launch. Each store is custom-designed, fully integrated with third-party applications and meets Privacy Act 2025 requirements.
The businesses that will benefit most from AI are the ones that own their customer data. That belief drives every store we build.

Three Key Benefits
Your Customer Data in Your Database, From Day One
On Shopify, your data lives in their system. With WooCommerce, every transaction lives in your own database. Clients typically save 40-60% on annual platform costs in the first year after switching from Shopify.
The Australian Stack, Built In — Not Added Later.
Xero, Shippit, Australia Post, Afterpay. Most agencies treat these as ‘Phase 2’ add-ons. We include them as standard in Growth and Enterprise tiers.
Compliance From Day One, Not After an Audit Scare.
Privacy Act 2025 removed the small business exemption. Every build meets Privacy Act requirements and is checked for WCAG accessibility as standard.
Three Build Tiers — Clear Scope, Open Pricing
Three clearly scoped tiers, quoted as a fixed price after a scoping conversation — so the number you agree to is the number you pay, with no surprise variations mid-build.

A Build Process That Removes Guesswork
Six clear stages, weekly updates. We only start a new stage after the previous one is approved.
Step 1
Discovery & Strategy
We audit your current store and analytics, map every integration your business runs on (accounting, shipping, POS, email), and define the product architecture — categories, attributes, variations, and filtering — before anything gets designed. You receive a written project brief and fixed quote, and design doesn’t start until you’ve signed it off.
Step 2
Wireframes & UX
Page-by-page wireframes focused on the paths that make you money: product discovery, product pages, cart, and checkout. Mobile-first throughout, because over 60% of Australian ecommerce traffic is on a phone. You see and approve the structure of every key page before visual design begins.
Step 3
Visual Design
Custom design concepts built directly in the browser using Gutenberg blocks — not Figma mockups that get “translated” into something slightly different later. What you approve is literally the store you get, and your team can edit every part of it after launch without a developer.
Step 4
Development & Integration
WooCommerce configuration, custom functionality, payment gateways (Stripe, PayPal, Afterpay, Zip, express checkout), structured data, and your third-party integrations — Xero, Shippit, Australia Post, POS. All work happens on a staging environment you can log into and review at any point.
Step 5
QA, Testing & Migration
Cross-device and cross-browser testing, real payment gateway verification, Core Web Vitals benchmarks against the performance budget, accessibility checks, and automated checkout flow tests. We don’t launch until transactions work end-to-end and the speed targets are met — not “close enough”.
Step 6
Launch & Handover
DNS cutover, SSL provisioning, search engine re-indexing, 301 redirects if you’re moving from an old site, and analytics verification. You get a handover package with all credentials, documentation, and a recorded walkthrough of your admin — so you can manage products, orders, and content without calling us. Then your post-launch support window begins.
Every Build Comes With These Foundations
Regardless of tier, every WooCommerce store we deliver includes:
Clean Code With Zero Lock-in
Built to WordPress coding standards and documented, so any competent developer can maintain it. The theme, the custom code, the domain, the content, and every byte of customer data are yours outright — no licences that expire, no platform that can change the rules on you.
Privacy Act 2025 Compliance
Cookie consent, data handling policies, and privacy documentation configured at build time — not retrofitted after an audit scare. With customer data stored in your own Australian-hosted database, Privacy Act obligations get simpler, not scarier.
Speed Is Standard
Sub-3-second loads, 90+ PageSpeed scores, and passing Core Web Vitals — measured before launch, not promised after it. Speed comes from the architecture: minimal code shipped to the browser, server-level caching, and an optimised image pipeline.
Staging Environment
Every change is built and tested on a staging copy of your store before it touches production. Plugin updates, design changes, new features — nothing experiments on the site your revenue depends on.
Mobile-First Design
Over 60% of Australian ecommerce traffic is mobile, so we design the phone experience first and scale up — not the other way around. Galleries, filters, and checkout are all tested on real devices before launch.
Managed Hosting Pathway
A clear pathway onto managed hosting: dedicated Australian servers, Fortress security, Redis caching, and automated plugin management — run by the same team that built the store, so accountability never gets split between a designer, a developer, and a host.
Designed to sell: what goes into a high-converting WooCommerce store.
A store that “looks great” and a store that converts are different projects. These are the five things we engineer into every build — and the reason our design process starts with your product data, not a mood board.
Product discovery and faceted search
Customers who can’t find the product can’t buy it. We design category architecture around how your customers actually shop — size, brand, price, use case — with faceted filtering that’s fast, crawlable where it should be, and invisible to Google where it shouldn’t. For stores with hundreds of products, this is usually the single biggest conversion lever.
Product pages built for the decision moment
Image galleries that zoom properly on mobile, stock and delivery information up front, reviews where the eye lands, and express payment options before the doubt creeps in. Every product page ships with Product, Offer, and Review structured data — so the page that convinces customers also qualifies for rich results in search.
Checkout without the leaks
Australian carts are abandoned most often at surprise shipping costs and long forms. We configure transparent shipping up front, cut checkout fields to the minimum, and wire in Apple Pay, Google Pay, Afterpay, and Zip — then test the full flow with real gateways before launch.
A performance budget, not a speed promise
Every build is engineered against Core Web Vitals targets — sub-3-second loads and 90+ PageSpeed scores — through server-level caching, an image optimisation pipeline, and code-splitting. Speed is an engineering process applied throughout the build, not a plugin installed at the end.
Search-ready from day one
Clean URL architecture, canonical handling for product variations, XML product sitemaps, schema markup across the catalogue, and Google Analytics 4 with conversion events configured before launch. Your store starts collecting data and earning search visibility from week one. Ongoing WooCommerce SEO then builds on foundations that were laid properly.

Why we don’t build on templates or page builders.
Most “custom” WooCommerce quotes in Melbourne are a purchased theme with your logo and colours applied, or an Elementor build that ships a page builder’s entire codebase to every visitor. Both are fast to sell and slow to load — and both leave you dependent on a stack of licences and a developer who knows how it was wired together.
We build custom block themes on Gutenberg, WordPress’s native editor. The difference is structural: less code shipped to the browser (which is most of why our stores hit 90+ PageSpeed), no builder licences to renew, and an editing experience your team already half-knows because it’s standard WordPress. When you edit a page, you’re editing the real store — not a builder’s abstraction of it.
It also means no lock-in. A template store is hard to take anywhere because nobody knows what’s load-bearing. A clean block theme, documented and built to WordPress standards, can be maintained by any competent WordPress developer — including the one after us, if it comes to that.
WooCommerce web design for Melbourne businesses.
Duelling Pixels is based in Brighton, in Melbourne’s Bayside, and most of the stores we design are Melbourne businesses — retailers running shopfronts in Camberwell and Fitzroy alongside their online stores, wholesalers in the inner north, and hire businesses across the south-east. For local projects we scope face to face, and for retail builds we’d rather see your shop and your stockroom before we design the store that has to represent them.
Designing for the Australian market is part of the job, not an add-on: Xero for accounting, Shippit and Australia Post for fulfilment, Afterpay and Zip at checkout, GST handled correctly, and hosting in Australian data centres so your store is fast for the customers who actually buy from you — and your customer data stays under Australian jurisdiction.
The results section below includes Melbourne stores you can check for yourself, with numbers pulled from Google Analytics and Search Console rather than a designer’s portfolio claims. If you’d like the longer versions, the case studies name the suburbs.
Common questions about WooCommerce web design.
How much does a WooCommerce website cost in Australia?
It depends on scope, which is why we publish three clearly defined tiers — Starter, Growth, and Enterprise — instead of a single misleading number. Catalogue size, custom design depth, and integrations (accounting, shipping, POS, B2B portals) drive the price. Every project is quoted as a fixed price after a free scoping conversation, so you know the full cost before committing to anything.
How long does a WooCommerce store build take?
Typically six to twelve weeks depending on tier and scope. A Starter store with a standard catalogue sits at the shorter end; a Growth or Enterprise build with custom design, integrations, and data migration takes longer. The six-stage process runs on staged sign-offs, so you always know where the project is and what’s next.
Can you redesign my existing WooCommerce store without starting from scratch?
Often, yes. If your product data, hosting, and plugin stack are sound, a redesign can reuse them and focus the budget on design, performance, and conversion. We start with an audit and tell you honestly which parts are worth keeping — sometimes that saves a third of the budget, sometimes a rebuild is genuinely cheaper than untangling what’s there.
Do you use templates or page builders like Elementor?
No. Every store is a custom block theme built on Gutenberg, WordPress’s native editor. Templates and page builders are faster to sell but slower to load, harder to maintain, and they lock you into licences and a particular developer’s wiring. Native blocks keep the store fast, editable by your team, and portable.
Will my store actually be fast?
Yes, and measurably: every build is engineered against a Core Web Vitals performance budget — sub-3-second loads and 90+ Google PageSpeed scores — and we don’t launch until the benchmarks are met. The stack that gets us there is server-level caching, an image optimisation pipeline, minimal code shipped to the browser, and hosting configured specifically for WooCommerce.
Can you move my store from Shopify, Magento, or Wix?
Yes. Products, customers, orders, reviews, and URL structures all migrate, with 301 redirects mapped so your search rankings survive the move. Your current store stays live during the build — there’s no downtime window. See how migration works, or read the platform comparison if you’re still deciding.
Who adds the products and writes the content?
Either of us, or both. We design the product data architecture and import existing catalogues; for new content, some clients write their own (we hand over templates and training), others have us produce it. Whatever the split, the handover package and walkthrough recording mean your team can manage products, orders, and pages without calling us.
Which integrations are included in a build?
The Australian operational stack is standard in Growth and Enterprise builds, not a “phase two” up-sell: Xero accounting, Shippit and Australia Post shipping, Afterpay and Zip payments, and POS integration with Square or Lightspeed where you run physical retail. Anything without an off-the-shelf connector, we build — that’s our custom development service.
What happens after the store launches?
Every tier includes a post-launch support window (30 to 90 days), and most clients then move onto managed WooCommerce hosting — dedicated Australian servers, enterprise security, automated plugin management, and the same team that built the store keeping it fast in production. One team responsible end-to-end means no finger-pointing between designer, developer, and host.
Do you only work with Melbourne businesses?
No — we’re Melbourne-based and work face to face with local businesses, but we design and build stores for businesses across Australia. The process is the same remotely; only the scoping meetings move to video calls.

“Nick has been managing my WooCommerce account for many years now helping me to improve my SEO and overall visibility of my website. Nick is always looking for ways to make things better and more efficient for me. Nick won me over with his honesty, trustworthiness and drive to help. He takes the stress out of the ecommerce side of my business. There are a lot of web developers out there that are eager to take your money and not provide the service you asked for. Nick is not one of these people.”

“We employed Duelling Pixels about 1.5 years ago when we re-located and re-branded our business. We worried about losing our online presence and customers being confused with our name change. So they created a fresh new look for our website and handled everything. Couldn’t be happier.”
